Matt Castens, Nurse and Clinical Educator
At St. Philip the Deacon since: 2003
Faith Background: My father is a Lutheran pastor in Chanhassen, so I grew up in the church. I was forced to services in my youth, avoided services during college, but always continued in my faith. As I moved into the real world, my longing for ritual and meditation led me back to worship and I have enjoyed it ever since.
Professional Background: I started as a professional actor out of college, but eventually moved into nursing in my quest for more meaningful work. I graduated from nursing school in 1999, and have since worked as a registered nurse in Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Trauma/Neuro Intensive Care and Flight Nursing. I am now coordinating staff development as the clinical educator for Critical Care at a local hospital and medical center.
What is something you love about St. Philip the Deacon? Definitely the music. And the warm, open community. I am continually impressed by the level of giving and mission in our church. I am also very thankful for the extensive and active youth ministry. My absolute favorite aspect of St Phillip is the opportunities to work as a prayer partner for children, families, and most movingly, confirmation students.
Have you ever been surprised by God? More times than I can count. His guidance and love never cease to amaze me.
If you could meet God face-to-face, what would you want to ask? The question “Why?” Why create; why us?
