Renewal

by Trisha Ragner

What clears your mind? What makes you feel renewed, energized, refreshed? Nature, quiet, a nap, a run are all answers for me. In addition to that, I want to add – taking part in Holy Communion. I am a mother to four small children, and my life is busy to say the least. I look forward to the moments that I can spend quietly in nature. I yearn for my daily runs for the stillness and prayer-time going on in my mind. I long for the times when I can participate in Holy Communion to feel cleansed. The time leading up to worship with Holy Communion may have been completely chaotic (remember, I’ve got 4 small kids), yet once I get there and receive the sacrament, there’s a sense of peace. A feeling of renewal. A grand reminder of what Christ has done for me. As I walk back to my spot in the pew, sit down, and my children are clamoring over me as I am trying to say my prayer of thanks, I am encouraged to show that same love to my children that Christ showed for me in dying on the cross. What an amazing love to model our lives after!

During Lent 2011, we are encouraging the St. Philip the Deacon community to reflect on the Sacrament of Holy Communion — recalling early memories, describing memorable celebrations of Communion, or reflecting on how Communion informs daily life. This post is part of that series. We invite your reflections about Communion, as well. If you would like to submit something for this series, please send it to Pastor Cheryl Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.
