Serving God
by Mary Ann Lange
I think of Holy Communion as a Sacrament of the Altar and the Lord’s Supper.
As a member of the Altar Guild I find joy in preparing or “setting the table” for communion. The work is never a burden but is always a privilege. It is a ministry which we all do as a form of praise and an expression of joy a nd an opportunity to serve God.
This is a prayer I learned, as a child, before I received my first communion: Oh Lord, I am not worthy that you should come onto my roof, but say only the words and my soul shall be healed. I still say it today before receiving communion.
During Lent 2011, we are encouraging the St. Philip the Deacon community to reflect on the Sacrament of Holy Communion — recalling early memories, describing memorable celebrations of Communion, or reflecting on how Communion informs daily life. This post is part of that series. We invite your reflections about Communion, as well. If you would like to submit something for this series, please send it to Pastor Cheryl Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.
