Talking to God
by Ron Soleta
Public speaking is the number one fear even over death. Some people would rather die than to speak to 200 people. I was one of them. I decided to overcome my fear by doing two things. One was to attend toastmasters and the other was to thank God for bringing me to Communion. When I walk up to communion we always have to stand in line. While I am standing there I thank God for providing this sacrament for me. I feel it is a private time for me to talk to God and to be a little bit closer to him.
While I was overcoming my fear I would ask God to give me the strength to speak in front of groups. I had to do a presentation to 200 coworkers. I think presenting to people you know is the worst. You have to face them during the minutes afterwards and for days and weeks after, so you want to be acceptable if not good. I had a few weeks to prepare for this presentation and part of my preparation was to ask God for the strength to stand in front of 200 of my peers and speak. God came through for me. I did the presentation and it was acceptable. Not bad for someone who feared talking to a group of any size. I no longer fear speaking in front of groups of any size. Thanks God.
During Lent 2011, we are encouraging the St. Philip the Deacon community to reflect on the Sacrament of Holy Communion — recalling early memories, describing memorable celebrations of Communion, or reflecting on how Communion informs daily life. This post is part of that series. We invite your reflections about Communion, as well. If you would like to submit something for this series, please send it to Pastor Cheryl Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.
